The other 80% — roughly 62 items — exist in a state of permanent neglect, taking up space, creating decision fatigue, and generating a low-grade guilt that never quite goes away. The one-in-one-out rule solves all of this.
The Rule, Simply Stated
Before anything new enters your wardrobe, something must leave. One in. One out. The wardrobe stays the same size. The quality, over time, only improves — because every new addition must be good enough to displace something you already own.
This is not minimalism for its own sake. It is a quality filter. When you know that buying something new means letting something go, you stop buying things you don't truly love. The bar rises. The wardrobe improves. The guilt disappears.

The Four Questions to Ask Before Anything Comes In
1. Will I carry this in five years?
Not "do I love it right now" — but will it still be relevant, still be beautiful, still be useful in five years? If the answer is uncertain, the answer is no.
2. Does it work with at least five things I already own?
A bag that only works with one outfit is not a wardrobe piece. It is a costume. The best additions are the ones that multiply the value of everything around them.
3. Do I know where it was made and from what?
If you can't answer this question, you don't know what you're buying. Transparency is not a luxury — it is a minimum standard.
4. Am I buying this because I love it, or because I feel behind?
The fashion industry profits from the feeling of being behind. If the urgency is coming from a trend, a sale, or a fear of missing out — wait. The feeling passes. The purchase doesn't.
