How to Spot a Bag That Will Last 20 Years:
A Buyer's Checklist
Stitching. Hardware. Lining. Construction. The seven things to check before you buy.
Most bags are designed to last two seasons. A few are designed to last twenty years. The difference is visible — if you know what to look for. This checklist will change how you shop forever.
Why This Matters More Than Ever
The luxury market is flooded with bags that look expensive and perform cheaply. High price tags no longer guarantee quality. Brand names no longer guarantee craft. The only reliable guide is your own informed eye — and the seven criteria below.
1. Stitching Density & Consistency
✓ Pass: 8–10 stitches per centimetre, perfectly even, no loose threads
✗ Fail: Fewer than 6 stitches per cm, uneven spacing, visible thread ends
Stitching is the structural skeleton of a bag. Low-density stitching will fail at stress points within months. Run your finger along every seam. It should feel like a single, unbroken line.
2. Hardware Weight & Finish
✓ Pass: Solid brass or recycled metal, heavy in hand, smooth movement, no plating
✗ Fail: Lightweight, hollow-sounding, plated finish that will chip within a year
Hold the clasp. Open and close it ten times. It should feel like a precision instrument, not a toy. Quality hardware is heavy, smooth, and made from solid metal — not plated zinc.
3. Material Grade & Origin
✓ Pass: Full-grain leather, vegetable-tanned, or certified plant-based with traceable origin
✗ Fail: "Genuine leather" (the lowest grade), PU with no certification, no material disclosure
"Genuine leather" is a marketing term for the lowest quality leather available. Full-grain leather, vegetable-tanned leather, and certified plant-based alternatives are the materials that age beautifully. Ask for the origin. If the brand can't tell you, that is your answer.
4. Lining Quality & Attachment
✓ Pass: Woven fabric lining, cleanly attached at all edges, no puckering
✗ Fail: Thin synthetic lining, loose at corners, visible glue residue
The lining is the interior architecture of a bag. Pull gently at the corners. It should not move. A quality lining is attached with both stitching and adhesive, and it should feel as considered as the exterior.
5. Edge Finishing
✓ Pass: Painted, burnished, or folded edges — smooth to the touch, no raw material visible
✗ Fail: Raw, unfinished edges that will fray and peel within months
Run your finger along every edge of the bag. On a quality piece, you will feel a smooth, finished surface. On a cheap piece, you will feel the raw edge of the material — which will begin to deteriorate immediately.
6. Structure & Shape Retention
✓ Pass: Holds its shape when empty, base is reinforced, sides do not collapse
✗ Fail: Collapses when empty, base sags, sides fold inward without contents
Place the bag on a flat surface and step back. It should stand with authority. A bag that cannot hold its own shape when empty will not hold it when full — and it will not hold it in two years.
7. Strap Attachment & Reinforcement
✓ Pass: Double-stitched, riveted, or bar-tacked at attachment points
✗ Fail: Single-stitched only, no reinforcement at stress points
The strap attachment is the most common failure point in a bag. Pull the strap firmly at the attachment point. On a quality bag, nothing moves. The attachment should be double-stitched and reinforced with a rivet or bar-tack.
